Handicapped Access

The Old State House Museum's wheelchair ramp is to the right of the front entrance on the West Loggia. It conforms to the specifications of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Because the Old State House is a National Historic Landmark, care had to be taken to avoid destroying the historic fabric of the structure when providing elevator access to the second floor. The elevator is located in the museum's East Wing in the galleries labeled 16 on the first floor and 28 on the second floor. Because the buildings three wings were originally separate structures, the second floor of the Central Wing is higher than that of the East and West Wings. To bridge this gap the museum has installed special wheelchair lifts at the junctures of the wings. Both restrooms accommodate wheelchairs and all exhibit videos are captioned. Special tours for the blind are available upon request.
