Edmund Joy: Edmund Joy was a Union officer in the 36th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers. At the start of the Civil War, he helped Union recruitment efforts in Iowa. Then, he decided to enlist in July 1862. He eventually served in Arkansas when he was stationed in Helena and then sent to Little Rock.
Alex Spence: Alex Spence was a 22-year-old Confederate soldier from Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Originally a member of the militia group called the Clark County Volunteers, he joined Company B of the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment during the first days of the war. Seeing action in some of the major battles of the Civil War, Spence was seriously wounded at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. Upon his recovery, he rejoined his regiment. While stationed in Georgia, Spence met and became engaged to Amanda Wilson. He died at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864.
