« Back to The Civil War

Confederate Soldier Alex Spence:

“Why, when Arkansas finally seceded from the Union on May 6, 1861, me and a bunch of the boys from Arkadelphia were rarin’ to go. We sure was ready for a fight! By April of that year, a large group of us formed a local militia group—called ourselves the “Clark County Volunteers.” We hurried to Little Rock just as soon as we heard about the delegates meeting for the Secession Convention. We knew that men from all over the state would be clamberin’ to join the first official regiment, and we wanted to be part of it.”
